The seriousness of an offense does not give an officer the right to search without probably cause. Reckless driving would not constitute a reason to go into a locked glovebox, for example. But, if he would have been arrested, an "inventory" would have been conducted, not a search.

Of course, if he suspected drugs or something else as a reason for the reckless driving, he may be able to articulate the reasoning for a search. But that's a different story.
