No, they arent allowed to search your car for you just speeding, unless he has some kind of probable cause or you are under arrest. What he probably did was sneak a way of getting consent to search the car into his conversation with you. However, you have had to have all of your stuff back (liscense, insurance, registration) and have been in a position to say no to the search, and be able to leave whenver you wanted to. If the search was solely based on consent, you also have the right to stop the search at any time, and the officer must comply with said request. If he had some probable cause, though, then he wouldnt need any consent and if he did ask for consent it was to be polite and for any evidence he would have found to be more likely to stand up in court as being legitimately obtained.

On a side note, you are SO lucky that ticket was only $105 and no points, and a failure to use flashers deal.

In all likelyhood though, he probably knew he couldnt have written you up for speeding because how would he prove your speed? He just knew that you were going hella fast at one time, and not fast enough when you went by him to get a wreckless driving summons on you. In other words, you lucked out dude!
