Anything Nissan usually does it. My dad's 1987 Nissan Pickup has 300,000 Miles and still runs as good as the day he bought it.
I would also look into a Geo. Hell, you really get miles for the money. Constant 40+ MPG. As long as you don't want style, power, or performance, it's a great value.

not as expensive as you'd think. i just went to the scrap yard today and pulled a trunk full of good misc. parts for less than $100.

Yes, true dat. My Saab 9000 parts weren't any more than any old Buick, and the car had more style and comfort too. That said, if you want easy to repair yourself Saab isn't the way to go - very clever engineering all over those cars but can require special tools to repair. I'd second old Nissan - if you're lucky you can find a decent old SE-R for what you're looking to pay.

A Nissan Sentra will also deliver mid 30 MPG normally, 40-45 on road trips, with a DOHC engine you can milk for respectable acceleration (for the class ).

"Very clever engineering" indeed... Right down to an automatic (if you were dumb like I was in June 1994) that was so complicated, they didn't bother selling parts or writing a manual for fixing it. Hopefully yours was a manual... [/vent]

I picked up a 1994 Ford Probe 1 year ago and it has run strong ever since. I only paid $1000.00. It had damage on the passenger side door which I have already replaced. I gave it a tune up when a I got it and have put 20,000 miles on it already. It does not leak any fluids nor burn any. It is a SE model with the 2.0L with a 5 speed.

Yep, loved that rubber, long-throw 5-speed The coil-on-plug ignition cassette with feedback to the computer to optimize the fuel and spark timing was fricking brilliant. Too bad the cassettes failed with frustrating regularity. I was fortunate not to have problems with mine, but others I knew had to replace theirs $$$.

I can tell you firsthand that parts are VERY expensive (almost BMW or Mercedes-like!) for a Ford Probe. Would recommend only if it was in stupendous condition.

I've got a good , solid candidate for you Antonio . A second generation ("A2") Volkswagen Jetta /Golf , of '88-'92 vintage . What they lack in style points , they MORE than make up for with reliability , fuel mileage and "fun" points . You can buy them cheap , they run forever , parts are cheap , and there's a massive aftermarket to give 'em a custom touch (cheap too - an example is a short shifter , which is ~ $50 & a 5 minute job ) . You can easily find them in your price range in great shape , maybe you could even find one in GTI/GLI trim which will get you a 16-valve engine . I can personally vouch for these cars , as I own two of them . One is a GL , which is what you generally see driving around and one is a Carat , which has more power creature comforts . We bought each of them for well under $2,000 and they reliably get near 30mpg through bumper to bumper traffic to/from work . They seem to get that no matter how you drive 'em .
Anyways , good cars , cheap price , reliable ... think about it . Follow the SVT link in my sig. for pics of our Jettas .

Used Ford Crown Victoria Police Car. Bought one from Georgia with 137,000 miles on it at auction for $800. Clean 94 with bucket seats, power everything, ABS, no rust and no body damage. Had to put brakes (pads and rotors) and two front tires on it. 15,000 miles later and not a single problem except for the passenger side power window regulator (replaced it myself).
I eventually buffed out the paint, added carpeting (came with rubber flooring only), a cheap truck center console and a CD player and I still don't have much more then $1500 in it! Looks good too (if you like Crown Vics).
I am going to sell it this summer (too many cars). I will be asking $3500 and will probably get $3000.
Can't beat that!
