http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3502218.stmSomewhere around 180 dead with many more injured. This is unbelievable. The Spanish Govt. are blaming ETA (Basque militants) but this is far beyond anything they have done before. A sad day.
Bless our servicemen & women overseas.

I have visited Spain. Barcelona is where Columbus set sail for America. I enjoyed Spain. The people loved the fruit wine drink called Sangria. That is terrible that terrorists are targeting countries that enjoy freedom and democracy. Terrorists are evil.
The only thing bad about Spain is the little Gypsy kids. They mug and rob people for their money.

Read that earlier. Long-term, philosophical question here: is the world (not just US, UK, Europe but every nation) on a path to be continuously and seriously disrupted by terrorism? Nowhere is safe anymore

The Basques are denying this one and pointing to Islamic terrorists. It's rather al Qaeda-ish, too.

Got back from UAE this morning and this was the news that greeted me. What a sick mess...
My wife has a number of friends that commute downtown using the metro; so far, so good, except we haven't heard from 2 of them and those have us VERY worried. They would have been heading into the Atocha station on their way to Gran Via for work.
Everyone is pointing at ETA, but they usually call ahead and give warnings to clear civilians out of the areas they hit.
This is just simply sick and insane.

The also didn't think ETA was still capable of organizing such an elaborate attack as they are supposedly a shadow of their former self.

Mom is heading to Spain in May for a cruise around the Med. She was relieved when she heard the cruise wouldn't go to Istanbul because she doesn't feel that's a safe place for Americans.. And now Madrid gets hit. She has friends that live in the city, so I'm sure she's pretty worried about them. The cruise leaves from Barcelona, but she and her cousin are staying with mom's friend in Madrid for a couple days before.
Death toll over 190 now, 1200 injured.

No way that was ETA sanctioned, they always minimize the civilian risk.
This was a highly organized "military" type strike with 13 of 15 bombs detonating within a 2 minute period. This took some serious planning and serious funding to pull off.
I shudder to think of who might be involved.
I am very happy to say that I have spoken with all of my friends there and they and their families appear to be unaffected directly.

Recent reports say that Spanish authorities located detonators and Koran-related audiotapes in an abandoned van somewhere in the area.
