I think you would be wasting your money and time. The car would not be competitive with today's vehicles. If you are seriously considering racing, "open track days" aren't real racing but practice days.
But, you can have a lot of fun with Mazda miata (sp?)cars for relativity little investment. They are fast and fun to drive.
Also, you will need to get your racing "drivers license" if you are seriously wanting to race. This isn't an inexpensive investment either..
Just some things I've learned being a member of the SCCA.. They may not apply to all racing organizations..
