All,

I have a 96 SE ATX (2.5) (UIM/LIM/TB/MAF/19#'s/cone) I am upgrading to an SVT radiator. Obviously the SVT radiator has no provision for the atf line for cooling.

Any recomendations on the required cooler size?

btu/hr rating would be great for those who didn't sleep through thermodynamics...

Alternatively, I could have a radiator shop add the function to the SVT radiator, (if it's physically possible, I haven't received the SVT unit yet) but I'm adding an external cooler either way, so I'd like to kill two birds...

TIA,

Andrew

Just stick with the largest that will fit in there. To be more specific, just stick with a heavy duty cooler for motor homes or heavy vehicles.

Reason I say go with such a large one, which really isn't that large, is because when you add an external cooler - you are simply complimenting your current cooling system. when you take that current cooling system out, a complimentary cooler (smaller) is not going to cut it.

FYI, the stacked plate design is BY FAR the better technology for cooling. It is less durable when runaway line pressures come into play, so you might think about a CD4Ejr shift kit if you don't have one installed.

You'll also have to be quite careful when installing it compared to a tube & fin because the fluid "tubes" extend to the outer surface of the unit. Be careful positioning & use the mounting pads wisely.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I would also add a thermostat into the mix. IIRC, Permacool sells them. That way, without the coolant to help warm the fluid in the winter, you wont overcool and never reach operating temps. The one that they have keeps 5% or so of the coolant passing through the cooler at all times to eliminate cold oil shock when the thermostat opens. I believe they said that it was a 190 degree thermostat.

Thanks to all of you for your input. Now if I can ever get back home to work on my 'tour, I'll be set.
