Properly maintained, rotaries are bulletproof engines.
Agreed, however I don't think that most people properly maintained their rotaries nor do I think that more people will. The large majority of american's (present company exclueded of course) dont' really seem to take care of there cars very well. Just drive em till they die or they want a new one. Mind you if rotaries become more common this might change, but most people won't have a clue about the added maintenance for their RX. I do like the rotaries also SVTcarboy, and I'm not knocking them. I just mentioned that they are a bit more fussy and require (currently) more maintenance then a normal piston engine. I would love to see a rotary sedan and a full lineup, there are more and more rumors about Mazda coming out with such a thing, ie RX3 RX7, and maybe even an unamed sedan, it'll be interesting if Ford lets them do it.
Miata's are quite amazing, the last gen was up to quite a bit, they just haven't found ways to get around the newer versions, which are a bit more modern and more set up for everyday driving situations. i.e. fuel economy, emissions, etc.
