If the rotary miata actually happens it will probably be better then the MS Miata. The rotary should be quite a bit lighter then the 1.8 and will be able to be mounted in a more central location like the RX8. I would worry about reliability though, that 1.8's been around for years and is fairly bulletproof, even with the turbo. We all know how finicky the rotaries can be, even with regular maintenance.

Properly maintained, rotaries are bulletproof engines. They are extremely durable and able to thrive on aggressive driving. I'd like to see a comeback of a rotary sedan to challenge the IS300 and kin...
The advances in the Renesis only serve to make it less fussy with better apex seals to reduce emissions, allowing side porting of the exhaust (which helps power).

I totally agree with this guy I picked up my 240 for 1200 BUCKS CAN. I'm gonna eventually drop an SR20DET engine, for around 1400.. I can pick it up, install it myself with the help of friends and family... and bam I have a pocket rocket... RWD. its a neat car, it has VLSD, 4ws, all power options, leather, and its fairly comfortable.. altough the downside is you gotta do it up yourself because the stock Ka24DE engine sucks. its basicly a truck engine.

The only problem being that the rotary doesn't fit in the current or past generation Miata's engine bay. How guys can cram a Ford 302 in there with no or minimal firewall modification yet the rotary doesn't fit I don't know. Next gen in a couple years might be a different story. Certainly something I'd look for.
The 1.8 is bulletproof because it's a slightly punched-out version of the 1.6 motor that powered the old 323GTX turbo rally homologation special. Mazda kept everything the same when they dropped the motor into the Miata except for the turbo, so it's way overbuilt for n/a application. That's why there was so much success in building turbo'd 1.8 last-generation Miatas putting down 250-300hp to the wheels reliably with simple bolt ons and good engine management (either the Link or better the TEC III). That's where Shiv Pathek (sp?) of Vishnu Performance, one of the top Evo turners, got his start, was turbo TEC III Miatas. The compression bump in the current generation made that a whole lot harder to do. I'll shut up about Miatas now.

Agreed, however I don't think that most people properly maintained their rotaries nor do I think that more people will. The large majority of american's (present company exclueded of course) dont' really seem to take care of there cars very well. Just drive em till they die or they want a new one. Mind you if rotaries become more common this might change, but most people won't have a clue about the added maintenance for their RX. I do like the rotaries also SVTcarboy, and I'm not knocking them. I just mentioned that they are a bit more fussy and require (currently) more maintenance then a normal piston engine. I would love to see a rotary sedan and a full lineup, there are more and more rumors about Mazda coming out with such a thing, ie RX3 RX7, and maybe even an unamed sedan, it'll be interesting if Ford lets them do it.
Miata's are quite amazing, the last gen was up to quite a bit, they just haven't found ways to get around the newer versions, which are a bit more modern and more set up for everyday driving situations. i.e. fuel economy, emissions, etc.

Only? You speak as if 320 is a relative horsepower figure.
Yeah... 320HP is nothing....
In your case there are exceptions...Mr. Supercharged Mustang Man.
You know he has two of them, right?
And we all hate him for it
I rather enjoyed going to lunch in the vert on a 70 degree day!

If you have never looked at the suspension on a Porsche 928 (1988 model or newer) S-4 or GT model, you should. 320 horsepower seems low for a car with such a good suspension. They are like a supercar underneath. They certainly hold their own on the skid pad and in the twisties.
