Note: All of the following were from a quick reference to the October 2003 issue of Motor Trend. The cars I've listed have a base MSRP (of new 2004+ models) of $30,000 or less (exceptions have been indicated). That does not mean that, fully loaded, these cars are less than $30,000. Hope this helps.

Imports:
-Nissan 350Z
-Mazda Miata
-Mazda RX-8
-Honda S2000 ($31,000)
-BMW 1 Series (2005)
-BMW 3 Series
-Infiniti G35
-Lexus IS300
-Mercedes Benz C-Class
-Toyota MR2 Spyder (mid-engine)

United States:
-Ford Mustang
-Pontiac GTO ($34,750)
-Ford Crown Victoria
-Lincoln LS6

As you can see, the US still gets it's ass handed to it.

Yeah, DaimlerChrysler has worked out the kinks in its Chrysler 300C Hemi and Dodge Magnum concepts. They'll be to market by 2005.

Chrysler 300 base starts around $24k with an underpowered motor. The Dodge Magnum is about $1k cheaper and a wagon. 300 availible in April with Magnum following a month later.

There were talks of bringing the Dodge Razor concept to the public. RWD, SRT-4 motor 2-seater for under $15k. I haven't heard anything since the 03 auto show.

There are trucks as well. Dakota is avilible with a 4.7L V8 and a stick I believe. Big discounts on Dakota with a new 05 model coming.

Best bet is an 03 or 04 Mustang GT which can be had for under $20k around here. Want better suspension? Upgrade it for cheaer than it is to make most other RWD sub $30k cars as quick.

Drive a good RWD car aggressively at an autocross or a track, then tell me that FWD is dynamically even close to RWD. Go drive an Acural TL 3.2 and tell me that you enjoy torque steer. RWD is far better in nearly every respect than FWD, the only advantage to FWD being in snow traction where the weight being over the driven wheels helps initial acceleration.

Now, as to where the car is made, that I don't give a rat's a$$ about. Just make it quick and cheap.

RX-8
