Please state the benefits of enclosing midbass or midrange drivers please!!

Hey Dave do you think you can answer this one!!

Most high-end home audio loudspeakers put the midrange or midbass driver within its own enclosure. So there must be a good reason for this action an action that can be transported to the car audio arena I would think.

Hey,
Enclosing Mid's is the way to go if you have the space to do it. I am a MECP certified installer and the benifits are tighter more accuate mids. Instead of them being all sloppy you will acctually nocite beats that you never heard before or your mids wheren't able to reproduce buecase of the "Free-air" design they where in. Any other ?'s let me know

I have a question for you Jason, how do you go about getting an MECP certification? How long or how many classes do you have to take? Would it be possible to take the course over the summer?

Sorry for all the questions but any help would be great!

Thanks,

Ryan

Jason Kanakry tell me how would one go about enclosing the 5.5" Midas driver of the Focal 130H speaker set that will fit in the doors of the Contour. Currently I am using the plastic shell of the OEM ford speakers to build an enclosure around the 5.5 Midas driver.

Do standard enclosures exists currently that can be bought off the shelf?

The enclosure will allow higher power handling and in the case of low qts drivers, it will can provide better midbass. The only bad effect of an enclosure is if you don't have enough space to keep the Qtc down around .8 or lower, you can get some boomy midbass response. This can be taken care of by crossing the mids over a bit earlier, or by using a parametric eq to flatten out the midrange peak.

First a MECP cerification you can recieve just by taking a test but i would recommed that if you haven't been threw electronic classes at a college or in the military to go to a school.. Like installer institute thats where i went in florida. The test is like 65 dollars now and you can take it at certain librarys. If you go to i think its MECP.com they have a listing of places and times i think. Otherwise contact them and they'll let you know

Ummm The Focal's. Atleast you got good speakers!!!!! Focals sound incredible. Back to your question. Ummm I haven't seen my Car in like 5 months soo im trying to remember. ITs in THe Upper Pennisula of Michigan in my Parents garage. ONe way would be to fiberglass a encloser kinda behind where the 5*7/6*8 is and kinda have it sticking out of the door panels. you would have to custom due the panels to and i wouldn't recommend that unless your a master with fiber. I would suggest putting them down in the kickpanels custom something there they will sound better when its just you in the car also. any more ?'s let me know

You can use the plastic shell as a base for a simple fiberglass resin reinforced enclosure. I highlight resin because you can use a simple technique using a paint bruch to apply it rather than having to spread the fiberglass jelly or putty around, making it much easier. You don't even have to actually use the fiberglass fiber either, an old cotton T-shirt that stretches will work great too with the resin!!!

Method of applying:

  • Use 3M or other spray on adhesive to get the t-shirt material or fiber glass to stick onto the base where you will want it. Stretch where needed into shape desired. Let dry.
  • Mix up resin according to directions on package. Use and old butter dish or similar to hold the resin, mix with small to medium paint brush used to apply.
  • Apply the resin in several thin coats, working quickly. As soon as it starts to get rubbery, quit working with it and let it dry hard until you can mix another batch. Continuing to try to work with half hardened resin will result in sloppy work.
  • Let dry and trim as needed using tin snips or a grinder disc.
  • Add rubber sound damping spray, poly-fill, or sound deadening mat to reduce harsh midrange reflections within the enclosure.

That would work and would probably be the easiest way but you would be stuck with the volume that the basket has. I don't know what the specs on the focals are.

Steeda, I am also very interested in these enclosures as well. I have alot of experience laying up fiberglass so that isnt a problem. My first problem is how much volume? my second problem is I have NO specs on my drivers and cannot get any. My qeustion is, What volume would be a good starting point to begin to experiment. My driver is Soundstream 6.5 SPL's. Could you make a sugestion to help get me started? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. smile
