you don't need a new alternator....just upgrade your wiring to 4 guage and you will not have any more dimming of the lights. Our stock alternator can handle almost any system, and their are people on this board that has much more powerful systems with no problem from the factory alternator. Even if you get a better alternator, you will still have to upgrade the 8 guage wiring to 4 guage.

Can anyone tell me how much wire is needed to replace the stock power and ground wires? My Optima should be in today or tomorrow and I was planning on changing out the wires when I drop it in. Sooo, how many inches of each will I need? Thanks.

The alternator cost about 345 plus shipping and i believe it was worth it. i also had it put on professionally. these guys i know did it for 150 thats also covers the cost of a new voltage regulator and bigger serpentine belt. to bad i got rid of my old alternator of i would have posted pics of the burnt lookin thing. it was disgusting.

i beg to differ. i have a 1300 watts audiobahn mono channel amp w/ a 1 farad cap and 4 gauge power. i also regrounded my battery w/ the 4gauge and my lights STILL DIM! so if u got a the cash for a more powerful alt then id get one. i hate my dimming lights. i think people think im flashing my lights at them constantly. ive had people pull over because of it a few times. lol.i felt like an ass.

Yeah my homie got a cap hooked up to his 98 se sport, and his lights dont dim. mine dim horribly, with a trashy sony mono amp (1000wrms). So when I hook the "beast" up (JBL 1200.1), my car might die.

I still say, stay away from the caps, and/or new alternator. Just because of some dimming, won't mean you need a whole new alt. I managed to shove over 1600wrms into my car, without any problems with my alt for over 3 years, and counting. Try upgrading your battery cables first. Even down to 2 gauge wires. If all of that fails, and you JUST HAVE TO get rid of the lights dimming, then buy a really small cap (.25 farad?) and put it on your cars accesories, rather than your stereo.

If your amps are making your headlights flash, I think you may have bigger problems than needing a cap. Maybe a priest and some holy water...

Really, running everything I have, as loud as I could make it go in the shop, my lights weren't dimming at all. Like I said, ADD 1/0 or 4 guage wires for your battery ground, engine/chassis ground, and the alternator cable. Do all three.

I hate seeing people waste thier money. For the cost of that fairly useless alternator, you could buy a new sub. As for putting a cap in line to the amps, you need to charge that cap, which will add a strain to your alternator as well.

Listen to DBZjr, he knows very well what he's talking about. If the lights are still dimming even after adding the wires, buy a small cap to run in line to your headlights. They will hold a small charge which will keep your headlights at full brightness even when the stereo is drawing full power (which pretty much never happens) If after you replace the wires, your lights still dim excessively, go get you alternator tested to see if it's even putting out enough power in the first place.

Just trying to help out here, don't waste your money. Only upgrade your alternator, if your current alternator needs replacing anyways. That's the only way I could see anybody justifying the cost of upgrading it.
