Sending him for estimates is a good beginning to instilling the value of a dollar & the importance of more attentive driving.
My daughter clipped a concrete filled post at a gas station in my BMW a few years ago. I had her gather estimates for the repair (then fixed it myself a few months later). That really made an impact on her. I then had her take a defensive driving course on her dime - which she was happy to do as apposed to any other punishment I might have chosen. All has worked out fine.
