If you are referring to using a 1997 - 2000 CD4E in place of your 1996 CD4E, it will work.
The plug to connect the wiring harness to the solenoid,
may be a different color but it will work fine.
The problem is that the EARLY 1995 CD4E Solenoid used a LOW IMPEDANCE solenoid design.
This was replaced with a HIGH IMPEDANCE solenoid design.
IF you mistakenly use the LOW IMPEDANCE on a 1996 or newer Contour, you will short out the PCM.
You don't have this worry here...
