Was wondering if I should bother ordering a new tranny from Ford, get a reman CD4E, or try to rebuild my leaking CD4E with new casing.

uhm, sorry I didn't see this...

yes and no.

Yes - It will fit.

No - The solenoid block is different in the older models. Actually, they changed it in the middle of the build year of 95.

For a list of other differences, check out my CD4E Differences Page.

If you are referring to using a 1997 - 2000 CD4E in place of your 1996 CD4E, it will work.
The plug to connect the wiring harness to the solenoid,
may be a different color but it will work fine.

The problem is that the EARLY 1995 CD4E Solenoid used a LOW IMPEDANCE solenoid design.
This was replaced with a HIGH IMPEDANCE solenoid design.
IF you mistakenly use the LOW IMPEDANCE on a 1996 or newer Contour, you will short out the PCM.
You don't have this worry here...

i have a 2001 CD4E from a cougar in my 97 contour. the torque converor is a little different so i ahd to sue the 2001+ cougar flexplate but it works great!

I think the build-date on my '96 LX is Oct 95, so I guess I'm okay... Perhaps I need to check out some auto dismantlers in the area...

I don't understand why you won't have it TIG welded first. That should do the trick. For a comparatively minimal cost its a good first effort & the replacement tranny can come later - if ever.

Perhaps you're having other tranny issues that I haven't read about yet...

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Nah, you're right, I just need to bite down and grit it... It's just that I don't have a shop (or much of a garage for that matter) so I have to rely on someone else to drop the tranny, take it apart, keep the insides somewhere while I haul the casing away to be welded, then bring it back and get it reassembled, and I may as well have it overhauled at that time, right?

I don't suppose they can weld it while it's still attached to the car...
