does it only do it after the car has been sitting for a while (at least overnight) with the parking brake on?

If so then what you're hearing is the sound of the rear brake pads breaking free from the rotor. What happens here is when you apply the hand brake the rear brake pads are pressed against the rotors and overnight or longer the exposed metal particles in the brake pads fuse to the steel rotors as they oxidize or rust slightly.


i said that..brakes binding also the handbrake cables can get sticky and cause the brakes to stay on slightly.your mpg will drop with this though
