Lately I have been experiencing a little bit of clutch shudder. It is worse when the car is cold, but can be felt somewhat even after things have warmed up. It still grabs hard, engagement starts pretty low and ends almost at the top. My car only has 45k miles on it and I really am not that hard on clutches. My driving is pretty mundane and smooth other than a few redline runs (maybe once or twice each trip I take ) and made with medium speed shifts. The previous owner was an older gentlement in his 40s, and I dont even think he knew what he had, I can only assume his driving was conservative.

My question for all of you is whether or not it sounds like I need a new clutch. And if I do, should I try doing it myself in my garage. From what I've heard and read our clutches are pretty expensive to have installed (9 hours labor) and a PITA to install in the driveway. To be honest, im 18 years old and have a lot of spare time on my hands that I'd love to spend tooling on my car. Another car is availible to me while I am working on the SVT. I've helped install clutches and rebuild motors before, but havent really taken on any major projects by myself. My main concern is breaking something (like the tranny) or getting myself into a position where the car is undriveable, disassembled and miles from a mechanic. Let me know what you all think.

You sure he didn't put a performance clutch in the car? I know that they tend to shudder especially at low speeds.

I'd have to say no. He had all service records availible, all documentation and was quite honest with me about the cars problems when i bought it. Plus, if you met the man, youd just know he wouldnt put a performance anything into the car. The guy got his oil changes doen at the dealer for gods sake and was bragging about how he got it changed every 4k miles.

Try bleeding the clutch, since bubbles in the clutch hydraulics could certainly affect clutch feel. The bleed port isn't all that difficult to access (you might just have to remove the air filter housing and accordion tube). Can't hurt, anyway, and you could bleed your brakes while you have your hand vacuum pump out.

The archives should have everything you need to know on the subject.
