Time delay is to correct unequal distances from the speakers to your listening position. The speed of sound (IIRC, 320ft/s) is like a snail's pace compared to electrical current (near instantaneous).

You could put a thousand foot length vs. a 1ft length of speaker wire in your car w/o perceptably altering the soundstage. There might be a noticable decrease in output due to the increased resistance of the extra wire, though.
