If it doesn't appear when you first start the car, then the bulb for the Low Fuel light is probably burned out.

My old 96 GL didn't have a fuel light either.... kinda strange...

I don't have a pre-98so maybe that is true, so I suggest take you dash apart and check the bulb or shine a flashlight directly on the guages and look for a outline of a Low Fuel Light
