Actually, IIRC, it was practice in that day to release a prisoner upon spcific occasions. Pilate asked the crowd who he should release, Jesus (who he saw as guilty of no crime), or Baranbas, who was a convicted murderer. The crowd replied that he should release Barnabas. I don't have my text here with me, but I'm sure someone can find the passage.
