I'm glad to hear thats how they portrayed him. Its amazing what some people think about you when they find out you have the same last name a Pontius. People litterally think that i am going to hell simply for that. And i always bring up that Pilate announced that Jesus did nothing wrong. I am going with my church on sunday and am real excited about this movie.

I find it absurd that any Christian would hold the Jews as a whole responsible for the death of Christ. The Jewish leadership of that day fulfilled a role, just as the Roman government did, if one is to believe what the Gospels say. Again, divine fate or destiny comes into play.
In the same breath I also find it absurd that any Jewish beliver would continue to grab blame that isn't theirs to grab. Instead of coming out and saying "Yes, certain Jewish leaders 2 millenia ago did a number of things that wouldn't be condoned today", the Jewish representation of today has to rush out and paint anything that potentially shows their religious forebearers in a bad light as "Anti-Semitic".
Neo-Nazi's marching in the streets shouting slurs and slogans against Jews is anti-semitic; recounting biblical history (even if there has been some artistic license that's been taken in spots) isn't, I'll wager, unless Mel went off his rocker and just wrecked the biblical accounting with his own version of things...
At the risk of sounding trite, the Anti-Defamation League would have been much smarter in asking that the whole of Christianity thank their ancient forebearers for playing a pivotal role in the salvation of mankind. Otherwise, how would the Christian concept of salvation work without the death of Christ?

OK, I saw this this afternoon and I must agree, don't criticize or chastize this movie based one "the way I heard it", see it yourself. here's my take on things as a Christian and leader of my sr. high youth group.
First off, how the Jews are portrayed, yeah, they have nasty teeth, but so does pretty much every character in the film except maybe pilot, Everyone is dirty, not well kept, this is not a nice glossy typical hollywood film. Also, I think it comes through fairly well that it was the Jewish leadership of the time that was conniving, and NOT Jews in general. This is just how it was written in the Gospels, which is what Gibson based the movie from.
Now, on to Pilot, he is portrayed as a man who wrestles with how to handle the situation. In one scene he talks about "(his) truth" being about squelching uprisings and how if he condemns Jesus he may have His followers starting an uprising, but if he frees Him, those who wish Him condemnd may start an uprising. He is shown as finding no reason to condemn Jesus and leaving it to the crowd, again just as it's written in the Bible.
The violance- well, it's pretty well known this is a bloody, hard to watch film. The gore is akin to the opening sequence in Saving Private Ryan I'd say. The accuracy of the punishment is pretty good as well, from the little bit of study I've done on Crucifixion. The Romans are shown as brutal, laughing and joking as they lash Jesus with the Flagrum. I did sort of full body spasms almost every time they landed a blow, it's not an easy thing to watch, Mel didn't spare the audience when showing the reality of what the punsihments entailed.
Now for my few criticisms. First, it was weird for me jumping into the story in the garden of Gethsamane. Kind of like picking up Lord of the Ring about halfway through Return of the King. For those with little or no knowledge of Jesus, this movie doesn't give much of a look at who he was overall. Also, as I read in one review, He comes across as very stoic to me and not as human as I would like to think. yes he stumbles and cries out in pain, but theres just...something...missing there. Overall, I'd have to say it's a good movie, maybe not very enjoyable to watch, but quite powerful.

I just saw the movie last night, and I thought it was an incredible movie. Like some of the other people on this site said, there wasn't a word in theatre after.....just silence puntuated with sobbing. It is truly a must see for everyone. The gospel has the power to change your life if you let it.

From what I've heard the jews are portrayed as conniving, with hook noses and bad teeth, whereas the desciples, who are also jews, are not.
Also, much of the scenes are not supported by scruptures, but by the visions of two nuns back in the 19th century.
And lastly, in the movie Pilot is coerced by the jewish leadership into crucifying christ against his better judgement. Apparently, no theologians, biblical scholars, or the Pope believe this to be true.
It seems that Mel Gibson has let the ravings of his lunatic father distort his portrayal of the last 12 hours of the life of christ.
You don't believe it and then you say it isn't factual. Why would that matter if you don't believe it?

Simce you said you are neither Christian or Jewish. You don't believe any Judeo-Christian interpretation if this is true. So now you have one more interpretation to disbelieve. 
Since Christ was Jewish, most of his disciples are Jewish, most people in the movie are Jewish, it is plausable that some of those are conniving, as are some Christians, as are some of any faith. The connivers are not merely "Jews" but the leadership Politicians. Politicians, by definition, are connivers (IMHO). So representing some of the inhabitants as connivers is not reflective of a race or religion, simply a fact of political leadership. 
I saw a still from the movie which showed the jewish leader with his mouth open, yelling. His teeth were brown and cruddy. Again, I have not seen the movie, but I think from this and other things I have heard is that the jews are portrayed as skummy people as well as evil. If I was jewish I would probably be upset about it.
are you seriously gonna hold on to that statement!? it was friggin 33AD, man......do the math, almost 2000 years ago....i highly doubt the advances in oral science and care were up to par around that time......the man [gibson] set out to portray an accurate account of what happened that day, and of all the talk about this movie you choose the fact that someone has brown teeth.....get real....

It is assinine to condemn, reprimand or even comment on a movie until you have seen it.
I am very interested in seeing this depiction of the story of Jesus last day. It seems to me a very personal perspective for Mel Gibson, as he wrote, directed and produced the film.
