Well, in the Passion plays I remember in the missals growing up Catholic, that is EXACTLY what happened. Pilate washes his hands of the situation, and the Jewish crowd (maybe mob mentality) is willing/eager to pick up the responsibility on his behalf.
Maybe it does not stand to proper History, but it is how the Passion stands in the memories and minds of many conservative Catholics. It IS the course of events which Mel Gibson likely grew up with as his understanding.
If not so graphically, the miniseries/TV Movie "Jesus of Nazareth" that I remember watching every year as a child does the same thing, and yet I never heard of uproar.
