I do not know much about the Ford Coil pac\ EEC and it's fuction,so is the following statement applicable to our 2.5 V6 engines? It was a response to the old question of do platinum plugs blow out with a blower setup:

"Some of the multi-coil ignitions are a waste-spark type, and fire on the exhaust stroke as well. This means the plugs fire twice as much. To make things worse, the second spark goes in the opposite direction, so they get hammered from both sides. That's why some of them are dual platinum."

I do not have forced induction or even a K&N... My question was generated by the fact that after my E-test yesterday on the 1996 "Tour, reading's of 0 HC ppm and 0 CO%. The NO ppm was 230 of the 518 limit.Pretty clean for a 125K Km car with the original plugs and all......it also sat for 6 months and ALL I DID was new Fram air\oil filters and fresh Quaker State oil....I'm amazed

The proper plugs for our V-6's are double platnium for longetivity. The V-6 does fire twice for each cycle.

i dont really consider it a wasted spark when if you think about. if the first spark ignites the mixture, when that second spark comes when the exhaust valve is open it helps to burn up any unburned hydrocarbons that will be leaving helping in emissions, thus that is why you have such good emissions

This is exactly our system. The circuit of the electric is like this:

Coil+ --> wire --> Center Electrode Plug1 ---. Ground Electrode Plug1 --> Engine Block --> Ground Electrode Plug2 --> Center Electrode Plug2 --> Coil-

So each timne the coil fires, 2 plugs spark. The reason this is done is not for emissions as there is not enough air in the exhaust for the second spark to do anything. It is done because it is easier for the computer to control 3 coils then 6 coils and it is cheaper. Cheaper is the key word.

The Zetec 4cyl uses this method also. But only 2 coils.

V8 uses 2 four cylinder coils.

It is "wasted" as the exhaust is not ignited by the spark. The spark firing in the exhaust stream does not do anything but complete the circuit. If you put a non waste-spark ignition in, all else being the same, the exhaust would still be the same.

Any unburnt fuel is taken care of by the catalytic converters which do not the the level of O2 a spark would need to complete the "burning" of the fuel. .

I read about the emissions thing somewhere on CEG, but now I can't find it in a search; I did find some articles on google saying that DIS ignitions have no advantage besides being cheaper to make. However, isn't unburnt fuel reaching the cats a bad thing? I thought that was one of the primary causes of cats failing.

i remember that too, i was also assuming that the dual spark was for the emissions system, because i know it is in place on other cars

That is just not correct by any means.

I don't even know where to begin on that really.


Let's bring up 1 coil firing for every cylinder verses 1 coil for each cylinder. Thus eliminating the rpm factor in coil runoff.

That stands out as a serious improvement.


Maybe I should just say, "don't believe everything you read"
Do a little more in-depth research and you will be rewarded.

As for the actual topic. Yes waste firing is used to help control unburnt hydrocarbons. Yes it is emissions related.

The only effect it has is reducing emissions and wearing out plugs faster. (Well catalyst longevity too) It has no performance implications: good or bad.

is what your talking about "coil on plug?" are there any drawbacks to the coil on plug setup?
