My trusted mechanic told me that my transmission casing is cracked, and I need to watch the fluid level every other day. Is there anything I can do besides replacing the transmission?

i dont think so might try sealing it with a sealer or try welding something over it, dont know if that is a good idea though

I don't know where you get it...but I know you can get a liquid epoxy sealer that is made just for transmision housing minor cracks. They say its like a liquid weld when it cures. Try checking with a tranny shop.

Hmmm... Have to look into that. I can check with a few tranny shops here... NOT AAMCO for sure.

Ack! Every tranny shop I talk to want to replace the tranny, and since the casing's cracked, I don't get the core refund either, so that's to the tune of $2000+!

However, my friendly local Ford dealer's parts guy just got me another idea... You can order JUST the casing, along with an overhaul kit, and get a trusted person to overhaul the thing. Then I'll have a nearly new tranny (hmmm... maybe fill this time with synthetic fluid?) to the tune of $600 + labor + installation.

The problem is finding a shop in SFBay area that'll do this without cheating me... Any suggestions?

To do the rebuild right you will need:

revised pump plate 30.00
master rebuild kit 140.00
New solonoid pack 130
New speed sensor 20
New speedometer speed sensor 35
bearing kit 30
torque converter 100
bushing kit 30
driven needle bearing in housing 12
overdrive band 12
servo piston and cap 14
Transgo Shift correction kit 30
Add external oil cooler 40

Done right this trans will be in better shape than when it left the factory!! Don't expect all this in a purchased rebild!!!!
