Have you tried unplugging the connector at the sensor and seeing if the gauge reads cold?
If it doesn't, then from what I can tell from the Ford CD manual, that wire might be pinched somewhere along the tranny or the mount and is causeing a short. The actually procedure in the manual to test the gauge for a Hot Enigne condition is to add a jumper to the sensor and ground it, which creates a sort of "short-to-ground" effect.
I would suggest unplugging the wire at the sensor (Located on the block) and follow it back as far as you can. You should find that it is pinched somewhere along the way. They might have clamped it down under a bolt or nut.
When I got my tranny back the first time, Both of my battery cables were completely torn to the hell and back. They had problems starting the car for two days and could not. Finally, I told them to tow it to a certain place and I would fix it. I just wanted it out of their shop! When I got there, to pick up the car, I raised the hood and grabed the negitive battery cable. It was loose, but tight at the battery. I followed it down and found a big gash in the sheilding. As I got the end of the cable, I found that the reason the car would not start was because they had not mounted it back on the trannys bell houseing, as it they should have. Yes, there was a bolt missing in the bell houseing where it should have went. I had the car cranked in 10 minutes, after finding a suitable ground (tranny mount) and found someone to jump me off. I looked at the guys from the shop and said, "And to think you do this every day and I work on copiers!".
This of course was not the only problem I had. I had several leaks, a busted rack, missing bolts and they didn't even fix my tranny problem!
I know what you are going through, so be patient and we will take it a problem at a time. We are all here to help and help we will!
