LOST

I am thinking about a Liberty as my next vehicle, especially the CRD (Common Rail Diesel).

The 3.7L is a V6 version of the 4.7 which has been used since 99. Both are great motors, but the 3.7L in the Liberty could use a little more torque. Fuel economy is the biggest grip. Owners seem to get 12-18 in the city and 16-25 o nthe highway, depending on mods and driving style. The 2.8L inline 4 CRD will not get 43mpg, more like 30% better. That motor is already availible in Europe.

The interior quality is outstanding compared to its competition.

not as powerful, quiet, attractive, or better handling then the liberty.

have you driven both of these vehicles? do you work at the escape plant or something?

No.

Yes, I have driven both. It's just like the F-150, they just do it better than anyone else. WHat cracks me up is that DCX had to redo the springs on the Libery and drop them because the Libertys were flipping over in very normal maneuvers. I forgot which magazine it was but they published the photos of what happened when driving a Liberty.

Go drive a Tribute. Tell me what you think. Next month they start building the '05 Escapes....hundreds of new parts on it....it's worth waiting for.

I heard there are wheel bearing problems (wheels falling off at about 30,000 miles) with the Dakota and Durango. I'm not sure about the Liberty.

The first statement is arguable. Ford clearly puts money into making a great pickup, but the Escape is more like their car programs that are not as outstanding in the market. You cannot tell me the Escape interior looks better than the Liberty.

There was one incident when Autoweek rolled one during the soloam testing, not normal maneuvers. And DCX stated the lowering had nothing to do with the incident, not that anyone believes them. I am surprised DCX didn't turn the situation around by stating how well the vehicle did to protect the driver.

Hmmm well the Escape stole the show from the Rav4. And it's the best seller....something must be right about them.

Stole what show?

Last I checked (last month) the CRV and RAV4 are still the professional car reviewers favorites and most recommended. The Escape is noted with having a much more respinsive motor and driving experience, but not as good overall. Liberty is also generally rated lower than the two imports with weight (cause of worse fuel economy and performance) and rough ride being the key disadvantages. My analysis, styling and price aside: If you just want an AWD wagon, RAV4/CRV are the best. If you want a fun driving experience Escape/Tribute. Styling and features If you want to tow anything or go off-road ever, you'll appreciate the truck-like frame of the Liberty.

The Escape reminds of my my old ZX3....drives just like it but quieter and higher up. Great driving dynamics.

Hmmm... That first statement definately is arguable... i've been up close and personal with the 150's vs the rams, and I do have a different opinion... But we are talking about Liberty's vs. the Escape. Mostly it depends on what you are going to use the vehicle for. If you want something that drives like a car (FWD), get the Escape. If you want something that drives like a Jeep (nothing drives like a Jeep), or is capable of doing more than taking jr. to soccer practice, then get the Jeep. You definately want the biggest engine you can get (diesel might be nice, but I haven't driven one yet). Do not get the Jeep if you want gas mileage though...

My fiancee was dead set on getting a Liberty to replace her Jetta 1.8T. However since we were leasing, we wound up going with a Grand Cherokee. With the subsidized leases on the Cherokees at the time (November), it didn't make any difference in price to go from a loaded Liberty ($27K list) to a relatively base Grand Cherokee ($29K list). Easy choice.
