I think if you are new to carrying a handgun that you should start with one of these.

SIG
HK
Beretta

The Glock is a proven weapon and is in service everyfreakingwhere, however a simple search will find it is not without controversy in terms of safety.

Fit is the most important factor. You must have the dexterity and comfort for whatever weapon you choose. If you don't, some amount of your attention will be focused on the weapon in your hand instead of a threat.

My opinion.

I have a CPL and carry a Sig P232. I am going to purchase a Glock 21 next. It's the largest of the 45's, but the size and weight deltas really aren't that different in my opinion. Anyway, I'm 6'3" and feel I can carry it well enough.

I'll second JaTo and Trapps. Fit and feel are the biggest factors. Personaly, Glocks never cut it for me. I went with a Walther P99 in .40cal.....love it. Go to a good range and put a box through each of the ones your considering. It works. When I bought mine, I swore the HK USP was the one till I shot it and the Walther.

I must agree with JaTo... Sigs are where its at... I have a P228 9mm that is unbelievably accurate, feels good in your hand, and has a great trigger feel to it. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a safety. I also have a S&W .45 that is a great gun, but its a little big/heavy/powerful for everyday carrying... its what I keep unlocked every night and next to my bed though!

If a .45ACP is an option, check out the Para-Ordnance LDA Carry Safe line. http://www.paraord.com/pages/carry.html

I like Beretta .380s, if you feel comfortable with that caliber for personal defense. I think it's reasonably potent and probably easier to manage controllable double-taps and followup shots, but YMMV.

Otherwise, HKs, Glocks, Sigs...you really won't go wrong.

There are some tiny Berettas, but, Glock is a very safe, very well built pistol.. I'd stick with Glock of the two, but, will chime in with everyone else on the HK. The USP Compact is available in 9mm, .40, and .45. A very nice pistol, as are ALL HK weapons.

Sig also makes an oustanding handgun. The 228 might be what you're looking for.

All these darn Sig, H&K and Glock recommendations are making my stomach turn.

This is all you need.

Kimber Compact CDPII. I have a Kimber Custom Compact that is great to shoot, relatively slim and compact and every time I had it to a shooter of a Glock, H&K or Sig, they love it.

In fact, one of my work friends almost wouldnt give it back to me and offered to swap the Kimber with his H&K USP in .45.

of course, the funny thing about guns is that they are just like cars. Ask 10 gun or car nuts what the best gun or car is and you will get 10 different answers.
