Also watch out for the O/D button wire. It doesn't allow for too much pull on the shifter (don't pull with all your might since it could snap that wire.)
True, but I put a new shifter on (with O/D button),, electrical tape is your friend.
OR just do it the easy way....relocate the button.
Get a nice shift handle with the O/D button on it like Kremi and I. Much easier
What I did was easy....just lengthened the O/D buttons and put the button in the tray (pre98 console) and used a nice SMALL shifter....I didn't like the HUGE shifter for the Cougar/Contour.
I pulled the wire right off the button itself. Drove around forever without the handle on. But it's all back together now with the pre-98 console installed and looks better than all your cars put together!!!
