Yes, I have searched and learned a lot but I have a couple more questions.
Anytime it's cold (~35F or lower) I have two problems with my tranny: 1. can't get it into 1st unless i have come to a complete stop 2. shifting from 1st to 2nd, won't really go into 2nd and causes a grind or seems to go in but then pops out as i let go of clutch
I tried the Ford honey, even in summer it was tough to deal with. Switched to Redline MTL, much better. Did not add FM. But now in the winter I'm having the above problems.
Main question, would adding FM help or hurt?
If I went to Mobil 1 ATF + FM, would that be a thinner fluid overall? If so I think it's time to sacrifice long-life for actually being able to drive it. People seem so concerned about making it to 150k or so, I'm at 52k and all this grinding/popping can't be helping the tranny have a long life.
I do blip the throttle a few times in the morning. I don't run it through all gears before rolling, as I have read at least one person suggest, so I can try that.

if you're on the mtl, all you need to do is row it through first thing for 1 minute. Count it down, I'm dead serious, most tranny problems will go away (won't shift into 1st, etc.)
I wasn't a believer until I started, now I can't stop. . .

i just let the car warm up. its to be expected. since the mtl is suppposed to have fm already i wouldnt add more. once the car is fully warmed up, it shifts like a hot knife thru butter.

It really sounds like you have syncro damage to begin with.
I would try just running regular ATF+3 and see how that goes.
Maybe running a dino fluid can prolong the inevitable a bit. (I.E. a rebuild)
Once the tranny and fluid are warm you should not have any troubles shifting.

Yes I'm running MTL now and yes, after warmed up the tranny works great.
Most of the time, I am simply blocked out of first (unless I come to a complete stop) and second takes extra effort. Occasionally I get the grind into 2nd.
I'll try "row row row your boat" for a solid minute tomorrow morning....

TO answer part of you question I believe MTL has its own type of FM already in the fluid. (Demon SVT told me that) Adding more FM than needed can actually cause damage IIRC.
Follow Demons previous instrctions.

I recently started using this startup routine:
Start car put in neutral Let clutch pedal out blip throttle to 2.5-3k rpm push clutch pedal in put into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and reverse put in neutral blip throttle to 2.5-3k rpm twice drive away
Totally helps. Trans used to shift kind of rough on cold startups, now with this routine shifts perfectly smooth immediatly.
btw, I use Redline MTL and have been very pleased (much better than even the mobil1+FM for shift feel when cold)

Thanks rkneeshaw,
That was exactly what I wanted to hear: How does Redline MTL compare to Mobil 1 + FM. I don't want to move back to dino ATF. So I'll stay with MTL and try your suggestion.... Brian

I'm running straight ATF right now and my second gear is pretty bad in the extreme cold. I've noticed that shifting VERY QUICKLY from 1st to second eliminates the problem. After it's warmed up it shifts just fine though. I'm going to put some MTL in later in the year and see how that helps.
