I'm in the market for a new beater since my son totaled my last one a couple of weeks ago when he slid on the ice and hit a fire hydrant ('94 Grand Am, 98K, $3,500 damage=totaled) Insurance company gave me $2,500 for the car. AT my work we have a "For Sale" board and there is a:

1992 Saab 900S 2 door hatchback
$2,500 or best offer.
147,000 miles
5-spd, A/C, CD Stereo, heated leather seats, sunroof
in great condition, no rust, runs well
all service records available
MD state inspected

NADA list's the car at Low Retail $2,050, Average Retail $3,050 and High Retail $3,800 (no adjustment for the high mileage)

Never really liked these cars nor do I know anything about them. But I may be able to get it for $2,000 or less and if it's a decent car I can live with the Snail-like looks

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

From what i've heard is that they are not that reliable and their parts are as expensive as hell. I would probably get something else if I was you.

Avoid it like the plague!!

My ex girlfriend had one it was a POS. You have to replace the battery evey year to year and a half because it like a 1/2 inch from the exhaust manifold. Electrical problems galore

I "test drove" a neighbor's that was for sale. Didn't like it. It seemed about as smooth as a lawn tractor, really.

For 2 grand I would recommend an Escort GT. My friend has one. It's got 160K and it's still running strong.

99 Escort

they must sell it...I dealt with this company for my 00 contour, they were great! if you e-mail them, they will tell you the reserve, and if you are the high bidder if it did not reach reserve they will consider you....It looks like you could def snag this for under 2k even though reserve is not met.

Scott,
You should talk to Josh about Escorts as he drives one and seems to have no problems.

Thanks for the input guys...I really don't see me driving the big red snail anyway. But i figured it was worth a look maybe. I'm not in a big hurry so i don't have to jump on the 1st thing that comes around. I'd really like to find a nice older Contour to put all my old SVT stuff on (E1 wheels, SVT exhaust, SVT intake, SVT springs & struts, rear sway bar, etc.) that would definitely be my 1st choice. Now I really wish I had purchased the pretty 95 Blue SE a few months ago

Scott,
I would suggest an early 90's Nissan 4X4. They come pretty cheap car and parts, i.e. $15 for a rebuilt front caliper. Easy to work on. And the 4cyl like I have gets almost 20mpg.

Andy W. The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
