im gonna have to go against the escort idea...anyways a "newer old" one atleast. my roommate bought one the past summer for $2500 and it was around for one month before he had already put $1500 more into and decided to get rid of it. Tranny problems, electrical problems, engine problems. Funny thing is that with all those problems and the 2nd tranny already on its way out...carmax took the car and gave him almost $1800 for it.

RUN AWAY!!!!! Also, I have to agree with the Escort GT recommendation. I ended up driving my wife's for a couple of years and had no complaints. Fun little car and pretty durable.

Any Escort model from 1991 to whenever they stopped making them should be pretty reliable. My brother has a 1993 Ford Escort with 125K on it, he also had a 1991 Ford Escort with 170K on it (it needed a clutch). Sold it for $450 and only paid $200 for it...

As stated, I have had my escort for almost a year and have had no problems (knock, knock, knock on wood). I have a 2000 ZX2 - 5spd. It has great pickup when I want it to, and I get 29-31 mpg to boot!

My best friend's mother had one when I was in high school. A 1993, the same model pictured. It was a POS! It was expensive to fix and it was in the shop a lot. You can do better for your money.

That would definetely be my choice but the car was my wifes car that she gave my two oldest boys to drive. The check is in her name so it would be real tough convincing her to let me spend her money on my truck that she really hates
