I used castrol syntec for over 30,000 miles and it NEVER gave me a problem. Don't listen to the haters. Go with what you trust. Those test with the race cars and engines told me that castrol was the best and that is what I used. BTW I changed my oil 3-5k. Lots of highway miles then 5k and if it was inbetween city and highway, i did it at 4. I'm not in a city long enough to need to change it at 3k.

I say used to use it because my car is dead and I'm getting ready to revamp my new honda. I'll be using castrol for it too.

Anyone ever switched over after 75k, and noticed any of this?

I switched to Castrol full synthetic at 90,000 with a Pure One Purolator filter. Changed it at just over 97,000 and sent a sample to Blackstone Labs. They gave it a clean bill of health. The intention is to next change it at 102,000.

I used conventional oil for 90,000 miles changing it about the same way you did with the Castrol Syntec. The conventional oil never gave me a problem.

Only if your engine has impending leaks will it do that,, I switched at 83 miles and was fine.

Some points to consider:
- Syn blends have a content of synthetic base stock of varying percentages. IIRC, some may be as low as 10% or so, so the performance is not measurably better than pure mineral based oil.
Bottom line? Buy the full syn formula to get the best benefits.
- Castrol and other use a cheaper synthesized base stock called a Group III, which is hydroisomerized, crude oil derived, lube stock. While pretty good from what I know, it is not quite as good as a PAO, the type found in Mobil 1 and others.
Bottom line? Mobil 1 is best, but for street usage, any synthetic should do.
- If a car is well maintained, switching to synthetic should not be a problem at, say 80K miles. The only recommendation I would give is to monitor the oil level closely after switching. Synthetics have different seal swell/shrinkage characteristics than mineral oil types, which could lead to some amount of leaking (this problem has generally been solved). Also, synthetics have a better inherent detergent ability which cleans out crud in an engine, which in turn could open-up leakage points in an engine.
Bottom line? give synthetic a shot!
- Change intervals for synthetics? You would be wasting your money if you did it at 5k-6k or less miles. Certainly 3k is way too soon.
