Hi,
I have a 96 V6 Contour with about 250 000km. My low speed fan has stopped working as of late. I thought it was the resister but after troubleshooting I don't think this is the case anymore.
Yesterday, I pulled out the relay for the low speed. I have five contacts on it. They are numbered: 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7. Using a test light it appears that 1 and 3 are hot, with 3 being hot all the time and 1 when the key is turned on. 5 goes to the motor while 7 appears to be a ground and 2 is nothing. I jumpered across 3 and 5 and the motor went. Now I looked in my Ford book and it says the relay is suppose to have a number 6 post that is a ground, but mine doesn't have this. Also 7 is suppose to be coming from the PCM and I would think this would only ground when it sends a single, not all the time.
Any thoughts?? Do I have a wiring issue? I also checked all with the AC on and things were still the same.
I would appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks

Have you spun the low speed fan by hand to make sure it's not seized (car is off!!)

One of my fans, high speed I think, quit and the low speed kept going high speed low speed...

If it's seized, you'll need to replace the entire fan unit.

If that's not it, I'm lost

Yeah,
I jumpered across the relays, low and high, and the fans both came on. It's not a fan issue, I think the PCM is bad.

Highly unlikely, more likely a dirty(burnt) relay contact or bad coil. Replacement of relay a relatively cheap way to confirm it being the problem.

As you have noted the relay terminal numbering and wiring diag don't match. Like your's my relay doesn't have terminal 6, so I presume 2 is connection to chassis ground. PCM provides ground signal(via terminal 7) for relay when low speed fan operation is required. Presumably this signal triggers a connection between relay coil and terminal 2 via solid state circuitry.

After more troubleshooting, I found that the terminal 7 is a dedicated ground while the signal coming from the PCM is on terminal 6. I now know that the problem lies between the relay and PCM, as I grounded out terminal 6-as would a signal coming from the PCM- and away went the fan.
Anyone have any experiences on shorting of wires between the relay and PCM??
Thanks

No, just deterioration and loss of wire insulation which could result in a short:

If you decide to repair this, note that it is much cheaper to order the harness kit (partnumber at url above) than it is to order the harnesses separately. You basically get 4 harnesses for the price of 1 with the kit.

Did you ever get this problem fixed? I am experiencing the exact same issue. Low speed cooling fan will not operate by itself. If I jump contacts 3 and 5 of the relay socket it powers right up. Haven't replaced the relay as of yet.

I think I'm having a similar issue as you all seem to be having. High speed fan kicks in I watch the temp rise. When the high speed fan stops the temprature decreases. Is this the sams as you are all experiencing?
