When I was a mechanical designer, All our stuff for the US was in imperial, but Canada and the rest of the world was metric.
It depends, but if some has imperial measurement as its proper name, it would be silly to change that. A footlong is still a footlong.
One thing I did notice is that when we went metric, a case of beer became a 24. (LOL! just kidding)
