Most of the problems with wire taps are due to the following:
1)It is important to use the correct one. Blue 14-16 gauge, Red 18-20 gauge. It can be hard to tell what the wire gauge that you are tapping into is.
2)There are cheap ones out there. Get ones that are UL/CSA listed like the 3M ones Wal-Mart sells and it'll be good. If it is of a design that will corrode (in dry conditions) or fall apart, it won't get UL approval.
If you must use one of these in a place where it will get wet, putting some silicone dielectric grease into it before installing it will prevent corrosion.
