Buy the parts from Bill Jenkins - the disc, pp and tob will come in at about 300 dollars. Then find a local tranny shop to do the install for between 500-800 depending on the shop. It's like 9 hours labor by the books so there's no getting around the steep labor charge, unless you are very handy with a wrench  Most dealer installs I've heard quoted were in the 1200ish range - so yes your quote seems high. good luck
