I agree with you there Wireless about XM's no commercial sell for in NY in the early 80' s a rock radio station stole all the listeners away from the other rock stations when they went commercial free one summer and boy was that a success but guess what that station is not around today. Digital satellite radio was tried once before in the 70 if I remember correctly as a way of getting a HiFi broadcast signal across the masses here in the US for pay but many issues prevented fulfillment from occurring.

But darn it how did the British do it?

I have it and love it, but look at where I live. Not many stations out here, except country stations.
