i'm going to build an engine while I drive my csvt, and put it in in the summer. Here's my question..Do I...
a). swap in whole 3L, block and all?
b). use 2.5 block w/3L parts?
c). rebuild new 2.5 from ground up?
I'm going to be putting in new everything except for the block. New crank, cams, pistons, heads, but I don't know which one would be the most reliable and most efficient. I'm not new to building engines, but I don't have any experience w/the duratec family until this point. If anyone can help, even with suggestions for the crank, cams, pistons, etc... Let me know. thanks

Why is yours bad?


For a 'experienced' engine builder it doesn't sound like you understand the benefits of the larger bore on the 3L which is a guranteed 30/30 hp/tq advantage. Why would you want the 2.5 if your building a N/A engine? FYI The 2.5 crank, and rods are the same as a 3L.

kinger, thanks for the info. I meant 3L block w/2.5 heads.. Would that be better than a 3L block w/3L heads?

I'd recommend doing a full swap with an 01+ 3L myself.


2000 SVT #674 13.47 @ 102 - All Motor! It was not broke; Yet I fixed it anyway.

Would this prove to have more power than a Hybrid?

Not really, just cheaper and maybe easier to get the same or almost the same power as the average 'decent' hybrids.

There is one thing to say for a basic hybrid. With very little money, no valve changing, only the basics; you can do it extremely cheap and it will outperform even a well modded 2.5L. However, the straight 3L swap with SVT cams will net you more power than the really cheap hybrid.

What timing chain set-up are you using, the older larger 10mm? I would assume so with the SVT cams. Is it a PITA to modify the lower end of the 01 engine to use the larger older sprokets?

The rule is, if you're using skinny chains, use skinny sprockets, adjusters, and slides. Thick chains use thick adjusters, slides, and sprockets. The older sprockets slide right on the end of the crank just as the thin ones do. No mods needed.

Exactly.

Whatever you do make sure you do not interchange any of the parts.


Normally the older sprockets are 1 piece while the new sprockets are 2 piece.
