As I see it, if you can work on one a little now and then, you won't find a better car for the money than a used contour/mystique. That's why I bought two of them. On the other hand, if you're going to hire someone else to do the repairs that may be needed, there are probably better options out there.
95 Contour Zetec, ATX (wrecked, sitting in the barn)
95 Mystique Zetec, MTX
2000 Taurus SEL 3.0L Duratec
1994 Crown Victoria LX 4.6 V8
1993 Chevy Silverado 4.3 V6

Here are a few that can be had for cheap, are often overlooked, but quite reliable: 1. Mazda Protege 2. Ford Escort 3. Mercury Tracer I don't know if the later year Chevy/Geo Prism is any good. My mother has an old 1989 with the Toyota Corolla engine in it. Still purring like a kitten, but has NO power/torque.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Same here .. a cousin of mine has a '91. He hates the thing, but it just won't die!

First off, if she is looking for good gas mileage, why not get the Zetec instead of the V6?
Also, I have a good friend that was nervous about getting a manual, but now she loves it! If she is open to the idea at all, just do it!

I would second this opinion. Especially the Protege. It's every bit as reliable as the Corolla, but a lot cheaper.

Why not just put: Ford Escort/Mercury Tracer, they are the same thing, just different logo on the body, but same ford logo on the engine and stereo! Escorts though are VERY reliable (my mother had her escort new, from 94, only problem is the passive seatbelt restraint system broke, but the car is perfect! Only was in the shop for a new clutch, thats it)

My brother had a 91 escort GT with almost 200,000 miles on it before he donated it... That car took soo much abuse... Was still on its original clutch even My other brother has a 1992 escort wagon with 150,000 miles on it and still running great...

I think I have come to the conclusion that that tour is not the right car for her, right now. I want it for me, but she needs something more simple. I'll keep an eye out for some ATX zetec tours and escorts. Something like that is probably best. Thanks for all of the comments guys, she got a kick out of reading this thread. She told me her next car WILL be a manual, but for now this is better. I agree.
