DPFE sensor may have popped off.
It has two rubber tubes that connect to the EGR tube. That's a common problem when a DPFE goes bad.

It's on the drivers side of the engine, back cylinder bank. A little black box with two rubber tubes coming out of it. they both connect to the EGR tube, when the DPFE goes bad I've read the tube pops off. Hence the popping sound you heard and the CEL light.

I'd replace it. It's not too hard, but you need a long flexible socket set to get too it.
