Hey guys, quick question. My 98 Contour Duratec, for some reason is loosing oil. It used to be that I lost about a quart of oil between oil changes. Now is seems that I am putting a quart in about every 2 weeks. There is no puddles underneath the car anytime, but there is oil coated on the backside of the pan (Where the plug is, but not on the plug) I am worried the it maybe a leak the would call for an overhaul, but I need to do something ASAP.) Please respond with any info

Could be bad cam seals, not sealing the oil letting it pass though.

I see that the Front Camshaft Pulley has oil that drips down the side of the engine (The side with the alternator) Does anyone know how to change the Camshaft gaskets? Are they hard to do? A responce would be greatly appreciated.

A qt.in two weeks is a lot. You would be lucky if it is just the Crankshaft seal behind the pulley. Spray down the area with some brake kleen or the like. Then run the engine and look for the leak to appear while the area is clean. It probably is a combination of leaking front cover gaskets and oil pan gasket. The oil sending unit is a leaker also but thats located above the air conditioning compressor. I also have a leak that I have had since the car was new. I have never had to add oil between changes though (3000 miles). I have replaced the oil pan gasket (2 times, once by the dealer under warranty)and the oil sending unit. I now know the main source to be the front cover gaskets. I am not looking forward to doing that job, but will soon as the smell of burning oil through the vents is getting worse.

What is it with the oil pan gaskets? I had mine replaced about a year and a half ago, and it's started to leak again. I gave the shop a Ford gasket to use, maybe the Fel-Pro one lasts longer?

I bought a black light flash light for $10. As soon as I get it, I'll clean the oil off the bottom of the engine and all around and add some dye to the oil. And the power steering fluid, because I think that's leaking too (although it must be a slow leak as I never have to add any PS fluid).

I was told by a Ford mechanic that sometimes these pans have to be replaced because of warping ....

or you can go to the Dollar Stores and get a black light bulb for $1.00 and put it in a socket and do the same thing with it...... and save the rest of the money.......

I know Pep Boys sells it and I've heard that it is available at Autozone.

NAPA or CarQuest should have it too.
