What about the speedo? The speedo wouldn't jump up as well if the clutch disc crapped out, would it? IIRC, it didn't when my OEM clutch went out, that's the main reason I didn't think it was the clutch in his case.

my wheel had been making that noise when i was making right turns for almost a full year... just a rubbing... not the clicking i was used to hearing from a failing cv joint in my mazda.

but now, when the car is completely stationery, and i put it in gear, the speedometer goes up if i hit the gas.

I just thought of another possibility. There are splines where the driveaxle goes through the hub. If the hub retaining nut was loose, the driveaxle could slip inside the hub, and the splines could become worn. With slippage and wearing, you could (should) hear a noise. With enough slippage, you would wear the splines out so badly that the axle would spin freely inside the hub, rather than turning the wheel.

The rubbing noise you were hearing could very well have been a loose retaining nut/driveaxle/hub. I knew of a VW Beetle that had the same problem many moons ago.

I have heard from a reliable source that it may be the diff that has gone out in this situation

i never even thought of that... but it sounds possible to me. the noise has been happening for a LONG time... just a very loud rubbing noise while going around ANY right hand turns.

also:

when i went to my car to have it towed to my house, to my amazement, i put it in gear, and it ENGAGED. i began driving home slowly... and about 3 miles later, it, again, popped out two or three times, popping out for good about a half mile from my house. it's since been towed to my garage, where it sits as we speak... i don't have the money to have it taken to a shop right now (cough, someone buy my wheels in the classified section), and i haven't yet had the time to look under the vehicle. any other ideas besides what you guys have said?
