ao anyway...

today i was coming home from a friends house, when i noticed something odd... i was in 5th gear, i hit the gas a bit, and the revs AND speedometer jumped all the way up, as if i was in neutral (the speedometer went up though...) anyway... this happened again... i started to get concerned... then it did it one last time and failed to engage the transmission again... and hasn't driven since.

i really hope this isn't a transmission problem... i can't afford to put yet ANOTHER transmission into this vehicle... im hoping it's just a broken CV... the speedometer thing leads me to believe that.

im not sure if it matters... but it was about 10 degrees outside when this happened.

thanks in advance for any insight you guys might have.

Sounds like the clutch could be slipping. Is it really hard to get in and out of gear? If so I would probably point my finger at the clutch. Have you had high clutch engagement? A good test to see if the clutch is slipping is to put the car in 3rd gear from a stop and let the clutch out, if the car just sits there and does nothing and doesn't stall then your clutch is probably slipping. If the car jerks forward a bit and then stalls then your clutch isn't slipping. Hope this helps some.

i'm led to believe that it's not a clutch issue... the engagement was perfect up until last night... no slipping whatsoever. it will go in and out of gear without any problems... the pedal pressure is completely normal as well. it's just that the car is completely not moving whatsover, even though the speedometer is going up when i hit the gas. i am being told that it's most likely a cv issue... which does make a lot of sense, especially because of the speedometer.

Do you hear an unusual noise? It would seem to me that if the cv is completely gone, that you would get a noise of some kind coming from the slipping/broken cv. What about jacking the front of the car up, and seeing if the wheel spins freely when the transmission is in gear? I would imagine that if the cv is completely shot, the wheel should spin freely even when the transmission is engaged. Don't know.......just thinking out loud.

yes, the wheels are spinning freely, although the transmission is engaged. it broke at the crest of a hill, so i coasted roughly 1/2 mile to the point where the car is sitting now... i really think it's the cv joints and not the clutch.

While you've got the car jacked up, and the tires are spinning, see if the entire driveaxle is turning. If all of the axle is turning, the problem will be in the differential/tranny/clutch. If the outer part of the axle is turning, but the inner part is not, the problem will be in the cv/axle assembly. At least, it seems that way to me.
