I don't bother looking. I'm sure it's gone up lately, but I stopped checking prices a long time ago. I go to the same gas station every time and I need gas, regardless of whether it has gone up a cent or two.

I've had co-workers who had to spend 5 months in San Diego on a job tell me their 3 bedroom, basic apartment was $2700/ month.
A $40K-50K job here in Maine would be $80K-100K in CA. It's all relative, I suppose.

Well I live in Silicon Valley, basically the most expensive area to live outside of Manhattan in the US

But due to the dot bomb bust prices have subsided a bit. Most of my friends pay about $1250 for a 1bdrm, $1600 for a 2bdrm, and $1900 or so for a 3bdrm. In the boom days of year 2000 add $500-$1000 for the Apt prices. Its all relative when you consider the salary. Our gas is higher here in Cali as only 2 refineries were cpable of producing fuel, the 3rd went offline due to a issue. It is back up now but I'm glad I'm not paying $2.50/G for Super like we were when the refinery went down.

As stated its not a perfect system and yes the idea of putting more money into the Govt's pockets is scary but if the money was earmarked for widening of freeways and other improvments I would gladly pay. Just as long as I;m not supporting an illegal immigrant with 7 kids I'm fine with where the majority of my tax dollars go.

We have to drive far because we choose to live in Suburbs. Live next to your job/school. Driving cost will reduce by more than 50%. I lived near campus while going to college, used my bicycle or shuffled my feet everyday. I now live within 6 miles to my office building.
In urban cities across the west coast there is a huge push of people moving back into the city centers and reclaiming the run-down areas so they can spend time with there familys rather than commuting. See Sacramento, San Francisco, Portland, & Seattle for exmaples.

Urban sprawl and strip malls need to cease.

Regular Gas was $1.55 per Gallon yesterday. My truck held $34. Lower gas prices would be great. They should lower gas prices except for SUVs. They should charge SUVs $7 per gallon. SUVs are hard to see around and they kill drivers of small cars in accidents. Plus SUVs are always riding someone's bumper. They should call it the "improved safety fuel tax".

we pay way too little for the amount of gas we use.

and in response to the movement back into cities, we're seeing that here on the east coast as well. especially as people get older, they either commute less or have more expendable cash to spend on a luxury condo in the city and therefore commute less...

Personally, I don't really notice gas prices rising until it gets up to $2/gal, which I don't remember ever actually happening in my area. Every car I've ever owned has needed premium, so obviously fuel economy isn't my primary concern.

I agree with those who say gas should be taxed more, but only if the funds are earmarked for specific road/highway projects (those who choose to live far from their jobs are the reason roads need to be expanded, so they should pay their share). And I would exclude diesel from the tax (commercial vehicles already pay more than their share of taxes).

Tell that to Comrade Richardson, the dictator of NM. He just tacked on a 3 cent raise in diesel taxes.

Premium is about $2 a gallon here, but that is better than the $2.30-50 it was last summer. Housing seems expensive here as I well know since I've been looking for a new place. Mostly $1000-$1200 for a low-end 2br apartment, but compared to when I live in SF, its nothing. Up there I was paying $1500 a month for a 650 sqft. studio and another $250 a month for a parking spot in the downstairs garage!

Course I did make 120% more money (wish I made that here, damn...).
