My VW had a bi-metal switch attached to the radiator. It would kick the fan on when the temperature in the output side of the radiator got above a certain temperature. Which meant there isn't enough airflow to remove the heat. I've seen fan kits in JC Whitney that do this.
Speaking of cooling systems - I wonder how long the hoses last?
