Here in NC they dont do sniffer tests on OBD-II cars they only run for codes and make the CEL come on because i have the DMV regulations on it, i would get those to see how they are sposed to test it I.E. wht all is involved, because i no if they failed me because of a sniffer test and weren't sposed to snifer test to begin with i would show them the regulations and raise hell about it

Here in Canada your cel light means nothing...You can still pass an emissions test with your light on. Your CEL light has nothing to do with you passing an emission test. Your CEL light could be lit and your emmisions could still be well below the accepted standards. Your CEL light does not mean your emmisions are below standards...Here they check your gas cap, exhaust system for leaks, and the driven dynometer test. It always helps to take the car in when its been run and the engine warmed up, new spark plugs, fresh oil and filter, air filter, and I usually swap in a new set of wires as well. Ours here are good for 2 years.

today after 215 miles the light returned....the car runs flawlessly. Does anyone know what the mileage reset is for the test to pass ....some have said 15 miles and I have even heard 500 miles. If it resets in 15 miles can I take the test?

Hiddendragonse,
Sorry to hear that the CEL returned. If you haven't already, do a search on 420/430 and you will see many, many threads about this. It is probably failing cats or bad O2 sensors. You will see in the threads, that there is a 80,000 mile warranty covering the cats. If there is any question and you have < 80K, get them replaced because they are very expensive.

It takes a long time for the cat efficiency tests to run depending on your driving style. When I had the dreaded 420 and 430 codes, I cleared them with my laptop software and I then monitored when the test ran again. With mixed driving, it took about 3 weeks and 800 miles for the cat test to run again and hence lighting the CEL again.
Also remember the P0420 and P0430 are "pending" codes. I know of two people who have reset their PCM with the battery and the shop still found the codes as pending. I know with my software that you have the option of clearing both pending and "regular" error codes.

if you have theses codes and absolutly need to pass it right now i would say to put in some mil eliminators and then go take the test, if your car has more than 80k on it you can gut the pre-cats and put in the mils, if you dont have the stealership replace them
the how-to is righ here pre-cat gutting MIL eliminators

see this site and look under article no.01-9-7 page 9
states reason for 0420 and 0430:
malfunctioning ect/cht
high fuel pressure
damaged exhaust manifold
cylinder misfiring
ho2's wiring concerns(shortened or chafed,bent pins)
damaged exhaust pipe/muffler/tailpipe assembly
retarded spark timing

Did not see where you live but in NJ they connect ot the OBDII connector. I went through pollution on 2 differnet cars now where the CEL come on a day or 2 after I went through inspection. I had cleared the codes the day before. Is this first time through? In NJ you get 45 days for reinspection. Clear the codes and you should go through.

I've had all of the readyness tests complete in only 2 driving cycles. I'm pretty sure that it's possible that they could complete in one driving cycle.
For those who don't know, the readyness tests will show up as incomplete after the codes are cleared or the battery is disconnected, until such time as the computer can run them. These tests check various sensors and components of the fuel injection and emissions control systems.
The readyness tests being incomplete is how the emissions testers know that you cleared the codes or disconnected the battery.
