I know this is a worn-out topic, but I have searched the Trouble-shooting forum and could not find a definitive statement regarding the water pump.

I own a 2000 SVT Contour and my wife and I are going to take it on a 1300 mile round trip in April. The car has 46K miles on it and I am a little concerned about the water pump going out during the trip. I have read about the plastic vs metal impellar, but could have sworn I read somewhere that the pumps on the 2000 models were upgraded.

Can anyone enlighten me as to whether or not I need to change the pump before the trip? I have never had an overheating problem with the car and the temperature gauge never quite gets to halfway mark, even in the hottest (Alabama) weather.

Thanks for the assistance.
