Right now my pick is a Sager NP4080v . Do you guys have any other ideas or good deals you know of?
TIA
For work, get an IBM or Dell (depending on what you do).
For play, get a Dell. IBM doesn't integrate high-end video cards in their laptops.
Stay away from HP. I know nothing good or bad about Sony and flat-out run screaming from Gateway.
If you want to stretch your dollars, check out Dell's refurbished units. You can usually save approx. $500 by going with them and half the time you get a new system that was returned from a big company that over-ordered...

Got to have the SW that will take advantage of the 64-bit architecture. Unless games and applications need more than 3-4GB of memory addressed to them, you have no reason for waiting on a 64-bit system, or the OS and game/application that is built for such a beast.

Now I do know HP/Compaqs seem to have alot of problems... dont know why, but people always have me try and service them, one thing I can say about my old Compaq I once owned, it was under warranty, then HP bought them, and where you plug the AC adapter in, they said I would have to pay $750 for a new motherboard for the Compaq, and they claimed "it was my fault" even tho i was always gentile with em...

IBM all the way, never heard anything bad about them (other than they tend to be a little more expensive). I have an HP and it's OK, but nothing I would scream and yell about how great it is. A friend of mine got a viao about 2 1/2 years ago and it's been a decent enough machine, but has had a few problems and came with a lot of unnecessary software that sapped performance.

Three years ago, I wouldn't either. But they've really turned around since then. Entirely different company. One of the founders bought the company out and took it private then hired a kickass CEO.
The parts that eMachines uses in this machine are pretty decent.. screen by LG, pointing device by Synaptics, optical drive by Toshiba, video by ATI... If I were in the market for a laptop, this one would probably be towards the top of my list (Powerbook would probably be at the top )

HP and Compaq are like the computers of GM. I used to have a HP laptop which for some reason the touchpad never worked right. I have a Pocket PC which the infrared quit in 4 months. And I have a friend who bought a brand new desktop which the heatsink fell off the CPU. If the computer had not automatically shut down, imagine what would have had happened with an AMD CPU.

I must have had a unique user experience. I had not a problem with my eMachines tower from 1999-2004 when I parted with it. It served to be a wonderful machine, which is much more than can be said of the new packages that were bought and returned at Wal-Mart where I worked this past summer (we had a 50% return rate of those things). I would trust an old eMachines, but never a new one.

And I may end up eating my words in a few months.. Was just looking around and noticed that Gateway is buying eMachines. Gateway is in real trouble in the PC market, I guess they're trying to bring the eMachines model of efficiency on board. They had something like a 40% increase in revenues last year. eMachines' CEO is going to be the CEO of the new company.. maybe he can work his magic with the new company. Link
