Thanks for the info guys. Moxnix I'll look into those M processors. I think I'll have it plugged in most of the time, plus I want to be able to play Half Life 2 in full glory . These can be plugged in a car adapter can't they? I would like to get a Centrino or something similar but the processor speed just isn't up to par for me; I want something that will be considered fast for a while.

One other question: Should I hold off a little while for any big new technology? I heard something about 64 bit processors coming out soon (as opposed to the current 32 bit processors) IIRC.

64 bit for laptops is still a ways away; not to mention they would chew through your battery. Sony, Dell are great products, but Sager is far superior in proformance tests. Excelent, excelent machines.

I have a Vaio PCG-V505Bx, and I LOVE IT!! It's small, it has excellent battery life, a great screen, built in wifi, and a P42.0Ghz processor+1GB RAM+80GB hdd to boot (I upgraded the ram myself, cheaper than through sony). . .they're lovely machines, and if you shop smart, you can get them CHEAP!

I would suggest an IBM ThinkPad T41. If you are interested, PM me and I can you my link to access the IBM Employee Purchase Program site to get some discounted pricing.

You get 5 hours battery life standard, 7.5 on the extended life battery, and 9.5 hours with the multibay battery and extended life battery. It comes with Rapid Restore for backup and recovery, and has Active Protection on the hard drive (which parks the heads on the drive if you ever drop it). The T41 is light (5 lbs). You can get a/b/g wireless, and our wireless antennas are built into both sides of the screen, unlike our competition. I can go on and on. We've got tons more patents than anyone else out there.

If weight savings isn't that huge a deal, you can look at the R40/R50/R51 which will give you most of the same features, just not as light of a package. It'll be priced about $200-$300 less than a comparable T41.

As for the processor, I'm not sure of the benchmarks for performance, but Intel is preaching a new story now. It's no longer about the fastest Ghz processor. The Pentium M's have twice the cache of the Pentium 4's, so even though a Pentium M 1.6Ghz sounds slow compared to a P4 2.66 Ghz, it really isn't that different at all, in addition to the savings in battery life.

Good luck.

HP... I personally dont prefer them, supposially they get hot, and a good laptop IMO, is a Dell, I have a Latitude, and what I like about it, is the ease of changing the hardware, if I want a DVD-Rom in, just remove whats in the module. Also what I love about Dells, is when its in its warranty period, and ANY problem happens, give dell a call, and a technician comes to YOUR house, not sending the laptop in and being laptop-absent for 3-6 weeks... I also think the HPs are built poorly... which is why they are so cheap (and they are loaded with software I dont want!!!)

If you ever take apart laptops for a while you'll start to notice how allmost all the brands are using the same parts. The line between brands is becoming more and more blurred.

I have to agree and disagree.

Agree: I will agree that certian parts are starting to be shared across brands as they move to really compete with desktops. Like wireless lan, chips, hard drives, video cards.

Disagree: Things like motherboards are proprietary to dell, sony, hp because of the way that they design the cases. Also where things plug in to the MB in their relation to other things on the MB. Alot of companies are going more specific in their markets nowadays. Alienware wants the gamers, sony wants the multimedia plug and play people (plug you camera in, plug you camcorder in, plug you tv in).

This is why laptops will always be one step behind Desktops. Asus can build a Desktop MB for any CPU in a few days (just a guess), exp: the 64 bit processors. Now Laptop companies have to try to design a case and MB for the cpu and try it out for a weeks. See if there is a heat issue. Redesign the fan, redesign the MB to move the chip closer the edge of the case for better cooling.

Sorry for long post. I hope I made myself clear.
