For work, get an IBM or Dell (depending on what you do).

For play, get a Dell. IBM doesn't integrate high-end video cards in their laptops.

Stay away from HP. I know nothing good or bad about Sony and flat-out run screaming from Gateway.

If you want to stretch your dollars, check out Dell's refurbished units. You can usually save approx. $500 by going with them and half the time you get a new system that was returned from a big company that over-ordered...
