well i have a 96 gl, took a cluster w/a tach from a 97. plugged it in and everything works fine. tach reads correct, fuel reads correct, mph works correct, and counter works correct. unless my car is totally diff. i don't see any problems!

Exactly a 96 and a 97 are both Pre-98 era 
The only pre 98 that wouldnt work are the first 95's with the cable driven speedo.
The 97/98 one you found needs to be from a 98.
Trust me CarDoc over at FCO ripped me off with a pre98 cluster he sold me for my 99. He said it worked fine in his than a month later posted that he had all the same problems that I did

Not to start anything, but CarDoc has gained his EXTENSIVE knowledge through experience. Could you do a 3.0L swap in 15 hours? He did. But if you ask questions over there, Terry Haines has the answer. But then again, what does the guy who designed the car know about it anyway? Perhaps I just violated a rule by blabbing about the other forum, but I'm a cynic and I felt it necessary to be cynical.

I was there, Cardoc sold him something....HE KNEW wouldn't have worked.....that is if he does Extensive research.

Alright. Thats enough about CarDoc. Theres a lot of people out there that respect him for his talents. To be totally honest I don't care one way or the other. He does have a bad ass Tour though. But all this does prove my point, a post 98 cluster with a post 98 Tour. That cluster you said you found on Ebay must be from a post 98. E-mail the seller and see if they know the exact year it was from, or do some research from any info you can get from the seller. Alot of early 98 Tours were considered 97's even though they came with VCT on the Zetecs. The valve cover I bought off of Ebay said it was off a 97 but had the hole for VCT.
